Theme: The Civil War

Level: Grade Three

The Civil War Literature Circle Unit was designed to meet the needs of different instructional levels for students in a third grade classroom. This unit centers around the American Civil War, as well as the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln.

This unit includes two different Literature Circle groups, each reading two books about the Civil War and/or Abraham Lincoln.  One Literature Circle group will be composed of lower readers in a third grade classroom, while the other group will be composed of on-grade-level/upper-level readers.

 

Reading Level:  Two

Civil War on Sunday is a Historical Fiction book about a daring adventure with the Magic Tree House.  Jack and Annie journey back to the time of the Civil War in America.  The two children do their best to help wounded soldiers and learn some interesting things about the Civil War.

 

Reading Level:  Two

A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln is an Informational Picture book that tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's entire life.  This book helps teach us some interesting things about Lincoln's childhood, family life, presidency, and so much more.

 

Reading Level:  Three

Grace's Letter to Lincoln is a Historical Fiction book about the Wide-Awake movement (the movement to elect Lincoln as president of the United States), Grace's family helps organize a rally in their small New York town. After seeing the candidate's image on a poster, Grace decides to write to him suggesting that he might win more votes if he grew a beard.

 

Reading Level: Fifth

Abe Lincoln Goes To Washington is a Biographical Picture Book about Abraham Lincoln. Beginning with Lincoln's arrival in Springfield, the story includes his courtship and marriage, his life as a president, the Civil War, and Lincoln's assassination.
