Internship in Educational Computing

Fall, 2007

Description:

This course may be offered for 2-6 semester credit hours. However, most students will register for 3 semester hours of credit. It will consist of supervised experiences of leadership and management under the direction of competent personnel or study of significant problems in a public school, district, or other appropriate agency/ institution.

Introduction:

An internship is typically a capstone course that is designed to assist students in reflecting upon major concepts studied in the instructional technology program, synthesizing the knowledge base, and demonstrating appropriate applications to individual environments. Individuals will approach their study in various ways but the outcomes of each will develop from these notions:

  1.  What have you learned in the program?

  2. What do you need to learn more about?

  3. How can you design a project to accomplish this?

Procedures and Expectations:

Each student will be expected to reflect upon the ideas outlined in the paragraphs above. An initial communication with your instructor should be held in order to outline and develop an acceptable project or series of activities to be completed. (This may be done in whatever way is most convenient, such as phone, email, etc.) The student will then formally submit in writing by email a detailed proposal that outlines the project and/or activities, and with whom you will be working.

In addition, a discussion forum will be used to communicate and update ongoing progress. This is a different discussion board than previously used. It has two parts. One part enables you to login and keep a blog type journal of your experiences, summarize what you are doing and learning as often as you wish. Please also keep track of who you interacted with and who you are working with on your project. (At least on a weekly basis). This area can be accessed and seen only by you and your instructor. The second section is a threaded discussion board that can be accessed and seen by others in this class. Instructions for registering and logging on are linked below.

Upon acceptance of your proposal by the instructor, the student will begin the studies.

During the development and implementation phase of the project, the student is expected to remain in close communication with the instructor concerning progress and experiences.

Presentations of Project:

Upon completion of the project, each student will coordinate with the instructor an acceptable date, time and method for demonstrating the accomplishment of the objectives set forth in the proposal, the lessons learned and the implications for practice.

Evaluation:

The instructor will deem the project Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) and so mark at the end of the grading period. In unusual circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor, a student may be given an Incomplete (I). This work would be completed during the following semester.
