What is a Writer’s Notebook?

That's what a writer's notebook is for. It gives you a place to write down what makes you angry or sad or amazed, to write down what you noticed and don't want to forget, to record exactly what your grandmother whispered in your ear before she said goodbye for the last time.

- Ralph Fletcher

A notebook is where you keep dew drops from a dew drop morning. It’s where the sun sets. It’s the wind in your face at the beach looking out over the water. A notebook is where you’re playing with your dog. It’s where you have dreams about walking on rainbows. It’s where the good feelings and the bad feelings spend the night.

- Briana Carlin (5th Grader)

Your First Notebook Entry

1. Turn to the first page in your notebook.

2. Label the top of the page with today’s date. For example, Monday August 27, 2007.

3. Write about a time when you felt completely terrified!

4. To help you get started, it is a good idea to list words or phrases that come to mind before you start to write. This will give you plenty of ideas for what to write about!

5. Read the example that I have given you. What do you notice about the words Amelia uses? How do the different sentence structures make the entry interesting to read?

6. Write, write, write!

A Sample Entry

The last room was so dark, I couldn’t even see the way out. At first it was dead quiet. We didn’t know what to look for or where to go. Then out of nowhere, we heard the ROAR of a chain saw! And a horrible, horrible laugh!

I practically yanked Carly’s arm off. I pulled her with one hand while I groped for the exit with the other. The saw was getting closer, my heart was pounding faster, and then there was the exit and we just flew out of there!
