Launch Activities:
After students investigate their reference books, they will complete a K-W-L chart about pets. They should
focus their attention on dogs and thedifferent characteristics of dogs. They will use these nonfiction text to
predict what the book, Because of Winn Dixie will be about. The students will also research the following
website to study about the author from the book Because of Winn Dixie. They will understand why this
author wrote this book as well as why she chose the characters of this book.

The following website provides a numerous amount of activities that the students can do during the reading of
Because of Winn Dixie.
Closure Activities:
After students finish reading the book, they will complete their K-W-L charts. They will also write a letter to a
character in the book that reflects upon their knowledge of the character. They should also include a picture
of their character with their letter. After the students finish writing their letters, we will put them together to
create a class book containing all of their letters.
