Launch Activity

Before reading these books with your class introduce a bit of Beverly Cleary information (found at www.beverlycleary.com).  Explain to your students that many of Beverly Cleary’s books deal with families and friendships.  Have students write a narrative essay describing their family.  They should include their names, ages, nicknames, hobbies, jobs, and anything else they think we should know about their family.  After completion hang the decorated essays around the room.  Your room will abound with information about the people who spend most of their days there.  If there is time, or if you wish, have them write a narrative about their friends as well.
