Ralph S. Mouse by: Beverly Cleary

Section 1 pg. 11-45

Character Sketcher
Your job is to identify a character’s actions (traits) and explain or prove these traits, identify the character’s goal (what the character wants to do or accomplish), identify the problem and solution in the reading, and complete a sketch of illustration of the character.  The traits you choose should be implied: they are not directly stated in the passage.  Use descriptive words and give at least three traits.  If the character’s problem is not solved in this section of the book create a possible solution for your character’s problem.  Sketch one of the following:  Ralph, Ryan, or Matt

Discussion Director
Your job is to involve the students in your group by thinking and talking about this section of the book.  You should ask questions that really help the students in your group think about the reading.  Your questions should require students to discuss their interpretations of the text and connect background experience with the text.  Come up with 5 thinking questions, as well as the answers to your questions.  Give the page and paragraph number where the answers are found.  Ask the following kinds of questions:
1 cause/effect
1 prediction
1 character
1 MCEOG
1 original thinking question

Passage Picker
Pick 4 passages that you believe are relevant and worth discussing.  These passages could be something you simply enjoyed, or something you don’t understand completely.  List where your passage is found and read it aloud to your group or choose someone to read it for you.  Tell what type of passage you have chosen, why you chose the passage, ask several good thinking questions about the passage, and answer one of your questions in complete sentences.
1 metaphor
1 descriptive
1 surprising
1 thought provoking
1 fact/opinion
1 on your own

Word Wizard
The job of the Word Wizard is to find words that you think your group members are not familiar with.  You will define the words, telling the page and paragraph the word is found.  After defining all the words choose two words to create cards for.  You card should include the word, page and paragraph the word is found, the definition and an illustration of the word.  You will be sharing these with your group.
Complete your role sheet for the following words (pick 4):

Crouched p. 13 par. 1
Winced p. 17 par. 6
Wearily p. 25 par. 2
Strenuous p. 29 par. 1
Sophisticated p. 40 par. 1
Bewildered p. 44 par. 3

Summarizer
Write a brief summary about today’s reading.  Your group members are counting on you to give a quick statement that includes main ideas, key points and interesting events in today’s reading assignment.
