Character Sketcher

Your job as Character Sketcher is to find 3 passages in section 2 that show Mr. Hoppy as the following 3 traits:

Explain how each passage demonstrates this trait, identify the character’s goal (what the character wants to do), identify the problem and solution in the reading, and complete an illustration of the character.  You’re doing GREAT!

Passage Picker

Choose 3 passages from section 2.  Your passages need to include 3 of the following types of passages:

Word Wizard

Your job is to complete a Word Wizard for the following 3 words:

ounce p. 36 par. 1

foliage p. 42 par. 1

titchy p. 53 par. 3

With these 3 words, also complete the following activities:

1.  Develop an analogy for the word “titchy.”

2.  Construct a cloze passage using at least 2 of the words.  See if your group mates can fill in the blanks.

Discussion Director

Your job as the Discussion Director for section 2 is to develop 5 thinking questions.  Be able to help the other people in your group go back into the passage and find the answer if they do not know it.  Write down your questions, your answers to these questions, and the page numbers where the responses can be found.

While coming up with your questions, keep in mind Mr. Hoppy’s reason for buying all the turtles, his reason for wanting to make Alfie grow, and how Mrs. Silver reacted to Mr. Hoppy’s actions.  You can choose to ask questions about Mr. Hoppy’s motive in his situation and how he solves, or attempts to solve, his problem.

Internet Investigator

Your job as Internet Investigator is to explore the following websites and take a few notes about turtles.  Discover how they look, where they live, and if the food given to Alfie in the book is really what a turtle would eat.  The following websites will help you out:

http://www.kidskonnect.com/Turtles/TurtlesHome.html

http://www.kidsplanet.org/factsheets/sea_turtle.html

http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/show/turtles.html

Once you have collected your data, organize the information into a graphic organizer and present it to your group.
